“Yes, God, Yes” is a wholesome, relatable film and refreshing in focusing on young females (as 2017’s “Lady Bird” similarly did). It fails to earn an R rating since it has very little nudity, very little profanity, and the brief online chats are fairly mild.

Written and directed with insight and an incredibly skilled hand, Karen Maine has created an engaging coming-of-age story, Yes, God, Yes. It is both laugh-out-loud funny and brutally honest. The film opens with a teacher (the wonderfully dour Donna Lynne Champlin) passing out detentions and monitoring the hall like an avenging meter maid.
That said, Yes, God, Yes is a decent flick that takes a run at a very real, albeit uncinematic, moment in every person’s life. Carried by Dyer, who proves she can do just about anything in the teenage market, even in her mid-20s, the film is a pleasant slice of adolescent life amidst the rabid Christian hordes.
It was a good story, funny, and spot-on with the feeling of a teenager feeling out of place, and in situations that overwhelm her and feel confusing. Hormones are real and affect teenagers. Seeing a movie that opens the window and lets the breeze in on that subject is refreshing. And the acting was great too.
